Evaluation

At the end of this project, there are several aspects that I would adjust if I approached this brief again. Whilst I enjoyed this project and the creation process where I experimented with mixed media and used oil paints, I was met with several challenges.

I originally intended to produce one image, but changed this to a collage of three which developed the narrative of Icarus flying too high, and relies on the viewer to interpret the link between the images and that Icarus has fallen. I think that it would be more interesting to paint on a larger scale to frame these pieces, add more details, and develop the depth to suggest Icarus is falling.
Although, I am more familiar with oil paints, next time I would choose to use acrylic for the 'Icarus on water' outcome as the biggest challenge was the time it took for each layer to dry.
In regards to the oil paints, I would want to improve this final outcome by making the three paintings more cohesive with each other by uniting the same colour scheme. The painting with the feathers on the water unintentionally stands out the most, because it is the least cohesive with the colour palettes in the portrait and hand paintings where I had purposefully imitated the same skin tone and background colour.
Finally, if I started this design process again, I would like to take my own photography to direct my references. As these illustrations are inspired by the Myth of Icarus and Daedalus, I would like to adjust the colour values and lighting so that instead of a pale, cool-toned background, I think that a darker blue would be a more fitting background to represent the sea and sky. Additionally, shifting the lighting to a distinctly brighter and warmer value would be a better imitation of sunlight.
